POUA mourns the loss of Pope Francis, an ardent social justice advocate and ally. At a gathering in 2015 in the midst of folks experiencing homelessness and poverty, Pope Francis remarked, “We can find no social or moral justification, no justification whatsoever, for lack of housing.” We at POUA completely agree. We are saddened by this immense loss for the Catholic community and the world and will continue to be inspired by the legacy of his leadership, values and life’s work.
We are so grateful for everyone's support of our Spring Celebration and Fundraiser on March 19th, and for the chance to honor Cardinal Seán O'Malley, and his support of our work over the past 20 years. Thank you to our hardworking partners and colleagues on our fundraising committee - who helped us raise over $525,000; our board members; Maurice Coleman from Bank of America, who helped host our event; Fr. Oscar Pratt; our residents, Monsignor Bryan Hehir and Kelley Tuthill from Catholic Charities for their video messages to Cardinal Seán; and to all of our partners, colleagues and supporters who contributed to and attended our celebration! Watch our Affordable Housing as a Social Justice video that we aired at the fundraiser, by clicking the link here, or playing video above.
Amid an ongoing affordable housing shortage in Boston, POUA and St. Francis House celebrated the groundbreaking of a new 19-story residential tower in downtown Boston. The new building will provide much-needed permanent supportive housing for households coming out of homelessness in an integrated, mixed-income development in downtown Boston. 70 units will be set-aside as permanent supportive housing for those experiencing homelessness; the residents of these units will benefit from case management and supportive services provided by St. Francis House. The balance of the 56 units will be targeted to workforce and middle-income households, thereby creating an integrated and diverse community. Speakers at the groundbreaking included Karen LaFrazia, President and CEO of St. Francis House; Msgr. Bryan Hehir; Bill Grogan, President of the Planning Office for Urban Affairs; The Honorable Kim Driscoll, Lieutenant Governor; Sheila Dillon, Chief of Housing and Director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing; Ed Augustus, Secretary of the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities; Maurice Coleman, CDB Market Executive for Boston at Bank of America; Mark Teden, Vice President of Multifamily Programs at MassHousing; State Representative Aaron Michlewitz; State Senator Lydia Edwards; and City Councilor Ed Flynn. We're grateful to our development team, our City and State leaders, and our lenders for their partnership, and for celebrating the groundbreaking of this transformative project with us!
